Jackie Barrett was educated and employed in the
sciences for several years before returning to school
in the arts. Her study of the arts began with photography.
Although traditional techniques were an art form she
respected, she was always experimenting with the
limits of the media. The Polaroid instant films offer so
much more flexibility than originally intended by the
manufacturer. These SX-70 prints were exposed, then
manipulated by drawing on the surface before the
development time was complete. During this time,
the dyes beneath the surface can be mixed and
redistributed to create a surreal effect. The degree of
manipulation depends on the mood or feel of the scene.
This technique combines the realism of a photograph
and the interpretive style of illustration. Her subjects
vary from scenics to architectural detail, portraits,
and still life. Each small scene is like an oil or acrylic
painting on a more personal scale.
